All-star lineup coming to Penn's Peak
Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe will host Eric Burdon & the Animals with the Edgar Winter Band on at 8 p.m. Aug. 29.
Eric Burdon has one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in rock and roll.
A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1994, and hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Voices of All Time, Burdon's music has forged new territory while also topping the charts for more than five decades.
Highly prolific, Burdon has released nearly 50 records in those 50 years, as front man of The Animals and War and simply as Eric Burdon.
Through the changing sounds and genres, what remains constant is his courage as an artist to explore new sounds, diving into new territory with his unrivaled and unique voice. Burdon has shared the stage with legends such as Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Witherspoon, Otis Redding and Bruce Springsteen, and has recently been cited by cutting edge musicians like Patti Smith and Iggy Pop as one of their personal top 10 musicians.
Burdon began his musical journey as a young man growing up in Newcastle, England. Listening to his idols, Ray Charles and Bo Diddley, he immersed himself in American blues and jazz.
As front man and driving force of the British Invasion band The Animals, Burdon helped shape rock and roll's DNA, and his imposing yet soulful vocals are the driving force of the iconic favorite "House of the Rising Sun."
A long string of hits followed, including "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and the Vietnam-era anthem, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." Pioneering the psychedelic San Francisco sound, Burdon's classics include "San Franciscan Nights" and "Monterey."
Burdon continued to perform throughout the years with different iterations of The Animals, while also founding and fronting the funk group War, one of the first multiracial bands, and topped the charts again with his groundbreaking hit single, "Spill the Wine."
In the decades to follow, Burdon became an accomplished painter and author, and he continues to record and tour now as a solo artist. The year 2012 saw the release of his latest album, "Til Your River Runs Dry."
Edgar Winter Band
By the time Edgar Winter left his hometown of Beaumont, Texas, in the 1960s, he was already proficient in every aspect of music.
A child prodigy, Winter has found success in music, film and television.
Winter's immediate impact on the record business with his first record, "Entrance," was followed up with two hit albums with his band White Trash. He topped that success with The Edgar Winter Group, creating the number one hit "Frankenstein" as well as the ever-popular "Free Ride."
The album "They Only Come Out at Night" peaked at number three on the Billboard charts and stayed on the chart for 80 weeks, on its way to double platinum.
Winter invented the keyboard body strap, an innovation that allows him the freedom to move around the stage during his high-energy multi-instrument performances. His live appearances have occurred around the world, and he is known for his own scintillating shows, as well as his riveting collaborations with the likes of Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band.
Winter's music can be heard in no fewer than 15 film and television projects, including "The Simpsons," "Wayne's World," "Air America," "Wag The Dog," "Encino Man" and "My Cousin Vinny," as well as advertising campaigns such as Miller Highlife, and most recently the "Tupac Resurrection" film, which includes his powerful song "Runnin' (Dying to Live)." which charted number five on the R&B/Hip Hop Charts. Produced by Eminem, the song was part of a soundtrack album that was number one for eight weeks. His live TV appearances include David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel.
Winter's live shows constantly receive rave reviews. His music is always evolving and he is a master of stretching his skill and imagination to produce amazing results. He also is a prolific writer, with a volume of poetry and a collection of exciting stories in his writing repertoire.
Winter is a musician at the top of his game, and he's proved he can do it all.
