All in the family
Galen Glen Winery in Andreas is offering a $4 special on bread and olive oil every weekend for the month of June. There's more to this deal than just a reasonable price, however.
The bread and olive oil come from two Pennsylvania businesses that, along with the winery, carry multigenerational traditions in these foods going back centuries.
Galen Glen has the bread delivered from Padora's Six Pack House in Tamaqua and the oil from Santisi Imports in Easton.
The winery's 80-acre land has been farmed by the Troxell family for six generations and over 200 years.
Padora's has been in business for 118 years. Run by the Padora family for 65 years, they bake their bread with what might be the only anthracite coal-fired oven in the U.S.
Santisi is owned and operated by sixth-generation Italian pasta-makers, and all of their goods are imported from Italy through a family connection.
Galen Glen Tasting Room manager Kathleen Matson was quick to recognize the opportunity she had with her business partners.
"We are all multigeneration businesses, and I think that makes this collaboration very unique," Matson said.
The winery has been doing business with Padora for the last five years and has worked with them on past events, but this is the first time it has collaborated with Santisi.
"We're happy for the opportunity to work with Galen Glen. The products work really well together," Santisi director of operations Vince Sciascia said.
"(Galen Glen) is run by some nice people. They help promote local small businesses like us and we appreciate that," Padora co-owner Larry Padora said.
With this being the first year that the winery has ever done the history-laden special, the popularity and revenue were hard to gauge.
Matson estimated that 35 people came over the first weekend for the bread and olive oil, along with a glass of wine and the view that the Andreas location offers.
"A lot of it has to do with its popularity and how much people are going to come back and request it. I think it would be a nice thing to carry on, though," Matson said.
