Fillies wrap up perfect regular season
The Marian volleyball team wrapped up a perfect regular season with a sweep of rival Panther Valley on Wednesday night.
VOLLEYBALL
Panther Valley-Marian
Emily Pilla became the 12th Marian player to surpass 500 career kills in the Fillies' Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley, 25-12, 25-6, 25-16.
The victory improves the defending state champion Fillies' record to 18-0.
Pilla ended the match with 13 kills, seven aces, and seven digs for the Fillies. Abigail Stankiewitch added a dozen kills, and Alex Stroia had seven kills and seven digs. Abby O'Donnell handed out 30 assists for the Fillies while Lauren Nietz had eight digs and two aces.
For Panther Valley (11-4), Jamey Mikovich had eight kills, five blocks and five digs. Kelsey Van Horn added six service points.
Stroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.
Pleasant Valley wrapped up their regular season with a convincing straight-set win over Stroudsburg, 25-11, 25-13, 25-20. With the win, the Lady Bears finish with a 11-5 record in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, while compiling a 19-10-1 overall mark.
Noel Kelly finished the game with 13 kills to lead the Bears' front line attack, while Kiersten Griesback contributed 15 assists, four digs and an ace. Bridget Lozier had six kills, four blocks and four digs, and teammates Kalli Walling and Sam Jimenez both had seven digs and an ace.
Pleasant Valley will find out their seeding for the eight-team playoff in the EPC later tonight.
BOYS SOCCER
Lehighton-Tamaqua
Frank Bokan scored four goals to lead Lehighton to a 6-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.
Joe Marks and Dan Baka also scored for the Indians (14-3, 10-2).
Tyler Hollenbach had the lone goal for Tamaqua (7-10-1, 4-7-1).
Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe fell to Blue Mountain in a Schuylkill League match, 7-2.
Johnathon Benner led the way for Blue Mountain with two goals. Fritz Miller, Kasey Krammes, Bryan Caruso (2), and Ian Leiby all scored in the match for the Eagles.
Michael Schwartz and Chris Williams did the scoring for the Olympians.
Weatherly-Williams Valley
Weatherly defeated Williams Valley in non-league match, 6-2.
Steven Hill led the way for Williams Valley with a hat-trick during the win. Giuseppe Mini had two goals, as Collin Schwak had one score of his own.
Jake Stover and Ryan Hoffman did the Wrecker scoring in the contest. Trent Dempsey had two assists in the match.
Northwestern-Catasauqua
Northwestern blew open a close game at halftime, turning a 1-0 lead at the break into a 4-0 final decision over Catasauqua in this Colonial League game.
Jonathan Haaf recorded three goals for the Tigers, and teammate Cody Gangaware added the other goal, along with an assist. Daniel Hallingstad also had an assist for the winners.
Northwestern outshot their opponents 20-9 in the game, as the Rough Riders' Gunnar Pattison had 16 saves on the night.
Palmerton-No. Lehigh
Northern Lehigh edged Palmerton, 1-0, in a Colonial League match.
The Bulldogs' Everette Bevans had the game's only goal. Daniel Belfontie added the assist.
Northern Lehigh had a 19-5 advantage in shots. Bulldogs goalie Nate Rex made five saves to record the shutout. Palmerton goalie Richard Roselli had 13 saves.
GIRLS SOCCER
Catasauqua-Northwestern
Northwestern handled Catasauqua in a Colonial League contest, blanking the Lady Roughies, 7-0.
Sarah Segan led the Lady Tigers with three goals and an assist, while Angela Motolese, Mckenzie Divers, Morgan Moss and Sabrina Mertz all added individual scores. Brandi Feinour had two assists, as well for the winners.
Catasauqua's Hannah Gough had five saves in the losing effort for the Lady Roughies, while counterpart Laura Hill stopped two shots for the winners.
No. Lehigh-Palmerton
Palmerton blanked Northern Lehigh, 7-0, in Colonial League action.
Monica Wood continued her scoring barrage for the Bombers as she registered three goals and a pair of assists. Brianna Doherty added two goals while Johanna Matsko and Jenna Blynn had one goal each. Elissa Plocinik chipped in an assist.
FIELD HOCKEY
Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg
Stroudsburg defeated Pleasant Valley in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference clash, 5-0.
Stroudsburg had a 4-0 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Lizzy Cunningham, Julianna Sweeney, Sam Tepper, Saje Fedrick, and Jennifer Bukowski all scored for Stroudsburg.
Bukowski (2), Sweeney, Sweeney, and Kelsey Stewart all contributed assists during the victory.
Stroudsburg improves to 16-0-2 (15-0 EPC) on the season, as Pleasant Valley is now 9-7 (8-8).
CROSS COUNTRY
Tamaqua, Blue Mountain-Pottsville
The Tamaqua girls picked up a win over Pottsville in their tri-meet with Blue Mountain and Pottsville, while the Blue Raider boys dropped both decisions.
Individually, Adam Melnick took a fourth place overall, while Kailee Carroll earned a second place for the Lady Raiders.

Jim Thorpe swept through the boys and girls races in their dual meet against Lehighton, as the boys took a 20-36 decision and the Lady Olympians snuck out a 27-29 thriller.
Individually, two Olympians won the race, as Johnathan Condly took the boys race, while Kaylee Kovac bested the field in the girls'.

Both the Marian boys and girls squads went undefeated in their Schuylkill League tri meet against Nativity and Schuylkill Haven.
Eddie Pulaski, Aaron Srinivasan, and Zaccary Roberts of Marian all finished in the top five for the Colts.
On the girls side, Tina Capparell of Marian continued her strong 2014 campaign as she finished first with a time of 19:43. Her teammate Emily Pulaski finished right behind her in second with a time of 23:32.
