The Day of the Rope, when reputed Molly Maguires were executed in Mauch Chunk and Pottsville, is memorialized in a statue erected May 2010 in Mahanoy City, showing a hooded man bound by wrists and ankles. “The Day of the Rope” was a dark day for Irish coal miners in Pennsylvania in 1877. That’s when multiple men, accused of being members of the Molly Maguires, were hung in several locations in the state, including in Jim Thorpe and Pottsville.

Local historian and playwright Bobby Maso created a play based on the last three days of these men’s lives. It will be presented as part of the Tamaqua Heritage Festival on Sunday.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the hangings.

Performed by the Tamaqua Heritage Players, the play will be presented at 1:30 p.m. at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.
