Hunter was not hunting when he fell from tree

Published December 01. 2009 05:00PM

A Delano man who fell from a tree on Lofty Road Monday morning was not hunting at the time. Instead, James Shaup Jr. was taking a Thermos of coffee to his son, Joshua. It was the 14-year-old junior hunter's first time in a tree stand, and Shaup didn't want him to risk the climb back down for the Thermos, said his wife, Tina Shaup.

James Shaup lost his footing and fell about 15 feet, badly injuring his leg and ankle. He remains in the trauma unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, Tina Shaup said.

She praised her son for his calm, quick thinking.

"My son was a man about this whole thing. He was mature, he kept his head, he called for the other hunters to come help my husband," she said.
