Tamaqua Public Library News
The Tamaqua Public Library is open Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The libray will be closed on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 25-26, in observance of Christmas. An abbreviated schedule will be followed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular hours will resume on Monday, Dec. 28.
New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, the library will follow an abbreviated scheudule, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library will be closed on Friday, Jan. 1, to observe New Year's Day. Regular hours will resume on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Christmas storytime
Children ages 2 to 5 are invited to the library to enjoy read aloud Christmas stories, songs, a Christmas craft, and lots of goodies.
Two identical programs will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 15-16, from 10-11 a.m.

75th Anniversary
A sincere thank you is extended to everyone who helped the library celebrate its 75 years of service to the community. The winners of 2009 Christmas Longaberger baskets full of books were Kate Dietrick, Tim Stahl, and Janet Keich. The winner of the fall-themed table centerpiece from Wednesday night's celebration was Linda Yulanavage.
Book raffle
The drawing for Tamaqua Public Library's First Annual Book Raffle occurred on Wednesday, Nov.25. The winners are:First Prize ($1,000 in new book purchases): Mary Ellen Stephens of Tamaqua; Second Prize ($500 in new book purchases), Melissa Day of Sugarloaf; and Third Prize ($250 in new book purchases): Ethel Felker of Tamaqua
Book discussion group
The library holds a book discussion group for older teens and adults the last Monday of each month.
The group will meet on Monday, Dec. 28, at 5 p.m. at La Dolce Casa for a Holiday dinner and festivities, along with discussion of December's book selection, Catherine Marshall's Christy.
Interested readers should contact the library so the staff can locate a copy of the book through the Interlibrary Loan system. The book is also available for purchase through the library
As always, new members are welcome to join.
Art display in reading room
An art exhibit of 26 oil paintings by Frances L. Stahl of Tamaqua is being shown in the Reading Room of the library now through the month of January. Her interest in oil painting began as a young child; with only one short course at Penn State University, Fran is mostly self-taught. Her subjects include old houses, Arcadian scenes, and wildlife.
Yearbooks needed
The Tamaqua Public Library is in the process of compiling a complete set of yearbooks for the following area schools: Tamaqua High School (Unknown Date to 1960); Tamaqua Area High School (1960-Present); Coaldale High School (Unknown Date to 1963); and Marian High School (Unknown Date to Present). The collection is still missing books from the following years:
Tamaqua High School's "The Sphinx": 1920, 1921, 1942, 1946, 1949, 1955, 1957-1959
Tamaqua Area High School's "The Sphinx": 1960, 1962-1963, 1967, 1973, 1974, 1976,1988, 1991, 1992, 2007-2009
Coaldale High School's "The Stentor": 1930-1932, 1934, 1941-1944, 1948-1963
Marian High School: 1980-82, 1986-2008
