Elderly pedestrian struck by vehicle

Published December 17. 2009 05:00PM

An elderly Palmerton man was hospitalized after he was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross a street.

The incident occurred at around 10:38 a.m. Wednesday, while Robert Kupillas, 30, of 3775 Fireline Road, Palmerton, was traveling south on Fifth Street.

While stopped at a traffic light, Kupillas looked to his left for oncoming traffic, before he started to make a right-hand turn. As he made the turn, his vehicle struck John Korpics, 89, of 609 Lehigh Avenue, who was walking east in the crosswalk as he attempted to cross Fifth Street.

Palmerton Police Chief Randy said Korpics was transported to Blue Mountain Health System's Palmerton campus, with injuries that were "non-life threatening."

Smith said Kupillas has been cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
