Christmas services

The following is a list of Christmas Eve services scheduled in various local churches.

St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville, will celebrate Christmas with services at 2, 7, and 10:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, West Broad St., Tamaqua, will have Christmas Eve services at 3 and 7 p.m.

SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will celebrate Masses at 7 and 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.

St. John UCC will have a Quiet Communion service at 4 p.m. and additional services at 7:30 and 10 p.m.

St. Jerome's Catholic Church will have Masses at 4, 6, and midnight on Christmas Eve; and at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day.

St. John Lutheran will hold a Family service at 7 p.m. and a Festival Candlelight service at 10 p.m.

Trinity UCC will hold a candlelight service, with Holy Communion, at 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Salem United Methodist Church will have a candlelight Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m.

First United Methodist Church will hold a candlelight service at 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

TOPS

The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.

The Dec. 16 meeting was the final event for 2009. Josie Mariani provided a word of inspiration, entitled "A New Year." The TOPS Loser of the Week Award was presented to Bernie Kunkel. Linda Hosler was named TOPS Loser of the Month for November.

Meetings will resume on Jan. 6, 2010.

TOPS is a non profit weight loss support group for men and women of all ages. For more information, stop by a meeting or call Nancy Barron at (570) 668-4651 or Bernie Kunkel at (570) 645-7702. Information is also available on the Web at TOPS.org.

Anyone interested in learning more may attend the meeting without obligation.

Recycling

Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.

All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.

Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.

Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.

Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.
