Wreckers, Indians win tourney titles

The Weatherly boys basketball team and the Lehighton wrestling team both captured tournament championships on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tom Fenney Tournament

Weatherly-West Side Tech

A big second half allowed Weatherly (5-1) to pull away from West Side Tech for an eventual 76-30 victory and the Tom Fenney Holiday Tournament championship.

Keith Barna poured in a game-high 21 points and also added seven assists to lead the Wreckers, who extended a 30-19 halftime lead with a 27-6 third-quarter spread.

The winners received 16 points from Brendan Rowan while Kyle Harris contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. Nathan Pfeiffer chipped in with nine points and five steals.

Palisades-Panther Valley

Panther Valley outscored Palisades in each of the first three quarters on its way to the 58-42 non-league win.

Brock Mitchell led the Panthers in scoring with 18 points. Teammates Zach Stanko (12 points) and Damian Lewis (11 points) also had big games.

Palisades won the JV contest, 41-22.

WRESTLING

Jim Thorpe Tournament

Lehighton crowned six individual champions and captured the team title of the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

The Indians finished with 135 points to easily outdistance second place Allentown Central Catholic (72 points). Pottsville followed with 69 points, Williams Valley had 62 and Jim Thorpe and Schuylkill Haven rounded out the six-team field with 41 points apiece.

Picking up titles for Lehighton were Jeremy Gornick (119 pounds), Matt Schaeffer (125), Anthony Farole (140), Dave Lucykanish (152), Mike Balliet (171) and Briar Stern (285).

Jim Thorpe's lone champion was Dillon Smith at 145 pounds. Smith was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after going 4-0. In the process, he passed Michael Wernett to become the all-time win leader in Olympian school history. Smith now has 117 victories to surpass Wernett's 114.
