West End generosity

The Operation Christmas Child tally, as counted at the West End Relay Center for OCC, the Countryside Alliance Church in Brodheadsville, was 2,218 shoeboxes according to Kyle Dempsey, local coordinator, and exceeded last year's collection by 40 percent. The total Northeast collection also increased from 10,600 in 2008 to 16,700 in 2009.

Dempsey and her husband traveled to Charlotte, N.C., as volunteers to prepare the shoebox gifts for overseas shipment. They and all the volunteers were honored to have Franklin Graham, president of Operation Christmas Child, come to inspire, pray and thank everyone for their generosity to OCC.

The local collection exceeded the 2008 count by almost 40 percent as the 2008 local number was 1,590 shoe boxes.

She is grateful for the donations, especially during these difficult times and says anyone interested in making or donating items to the 2010 shoe boxes can contact Countryside Alliance Church, Route 115 & Countryside Drive at (570) 992-3315.
