Tamaqua girls reach tourney finals

The Tamaqua girls advanced to the finals of the Southern Lehigh Holiday Tournament with a convincing win over Harriton Tuesday.

In other basketball action, Weatherly and Palmerton both gained victories from their boys and girls teams.

Other winners included the Northwestern and Pleasant Valley boys, while the Tamaqua swim team gained a sweep.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Mahanoy Area-

Northwestern

Northwestern rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime and outscored Mahanoy Area 9-4 in the extra frame to garner a 46-41 overtime victory.

The win improves the Tigers to 4-3 on the season.

Kevin Oxley was a one-man wrecking crew for Northwestern as he tallied a game-high 25 points, including five three-pointers.

For Mahanoy Area, Francis Senglar led the way with 15 points, while Jim Wagner netted 11.

Mahanoy Area was a 41-39 winner in the JV game.

Weatherly-

West Side Tech

Weatherly raced out to a 48-21 halftime lead and placed four players in double-figures, en route to an 80-60 non-league victory over West Side Tech.

The win improves the Wreckers to 6-1 on the season.

Nathan Pfeiffer (23 points, three treys) and Keith Barna (20 points, four treys) combined for over half of Weatherly's points. In addition, George Wallish tallied 16 points and Kyle Harris chipped in with 12.

West Side Tech was paced by Justin Marinos, who led all scorers with 26 points.

Weatherly was also victorious in the JV game, 39-37. Don Johnson led West Side Tech with 10 points in the losing effort.

Slatington Rotary Tournament

Palmerton-Lehighton

Tyler Kravetz poured in a career-high 30 points and pulled down 20 rebounds as Palmerton picked up its second win of the season with a 69-63 victory over Lehighton in the consolation game of the Slatington Rotary Tournament.

Christian Marcin was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line (eight of which came in the fourth quarter) and finished with 22 points to back up Kravetz.

For Lehighton, Heath Markley scored 18 and Tyler Hill added 15.

Cougar Holiday Classic

Bangor-Pleasant Vy.

In the consolation game of the Cougar Holiday Classic, Pleasant Valley defeated Bangor by a score of 54-45.

The Bears shot 48-percent from the field and were led by Mike Sharpe's game-high 25 points, including three three-pointers. Pat Kregeloh also added 12 points in the win.

For Bangor, Andy Mulitsch scored 20 points in the loss.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Weatherly-

Lackawanna Trail

Tied at 24-24, Weatherly outscored Lackawanna Trail 13-6 in the third quarter and held on for a 48-39 non-league victory.

With the win, Weatherly improves to 4-2 on the season.

Weatherly's Alexa Figus led all scorers with 12 points, while Saranda Snyder added 11 points including three three-pointers.

Courtney Bishop paced Lackawanna Trail with nine points.

In the JV game, Weatherly took home a 43-37 victory behind 24 points from Alicia Panzarella.

Holiday Classic

Palmerton-Jim Thorpe

Palmerton defeated Jim Thorpe by a score of 52-35 in the consolation game of the Lady Indian Holiday Classic.

Kristen Romano and Kelsey Hay led the Bombers with 14 points apiece.

For Jim Thorpe, Hilary Reis and Brittany Holland each tallied eight points in the loss.

Romano, Hay and Holland were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tamaqua-Harriton

Tamaqua remained undefeated by routing Harriton 62-29 in the opening round of the Southern Lehigh Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Raiders (5-0), leading 16-10 after one quarter, broke open the game by outscoring the Lady Rams 20-3 in the second stanza for a 36-13 lead at the half.

Amy Zehner poured in 18 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Raiders, while Elissa Streisel netted 15 points, including four triples. Kayla Hope added nine points and Allison Updike grabbed 17 rebounds.

Betsy Hurtado had six points for Harriton (1-5), a District 1 Class AAA school in the Lower Merion School District.

Tamaqua will face host Southern Lehigh for the tourney title tonight.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua posted a non-league sweep of Hazleton yesterday afternoon in the Tamaqua Area Natatorium.

The Tamaqua boys remained unbeaten on the season (4-0) with a 122-60 victory. The Raiders won 10 of 12 events, including all three relays. Dane DeWire (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Ben Tuckett (200 IM, 100 backstroke) were multiple-event winners for Tamaqua. Both swimmers also aided in two relay victories.

In the girls meet, Tamaqua improved to 3-1 on the year with a 103-81 victory. Samantha Digilio won the 50 freestyle and factored in two relay wins, while Schuyler Schmidt captured the 100 freestyle in addition to two relay victories.
