Taking children away from Sunday services
Dear Editor:
Entering my sixth year as a Sunday School teacher at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, I once again have to deal with students missing class for soccer games, wrestling matches, gymnastic and dance recitals among other things. Since we only meet once a week, missing a class which is an hour and 15 minutes is the equivalent of missing a week of another class such as math, science and reading.
It would not take long for a student to be behind if they missed five math classes and the same is true with our Bible and religion classes.
I often wonder who sets up these events that take children away from Sunday Mass, services and religious instruction and why parents, priests and ministers don't ask them to stop it.
Professional teams, college teams and high school all refrain from games on Sunday morning. Why is it that we cannot do the same for our elementary school children.
I ask you to take a stand and ask that this be stopped and that Sunday mornings be reserved for worship. Parents tell your coaches and clergy speak up.
