Fire prevention week
The Tamaqua Fire Department will celebrate Fire Prevention Week all next week in the borough. The department will host special programs in the Tamaqua Elementary School and St. Jerome's Regional School.
Additionally, each of the department's four volunteer fire companies will host an Open House at their respective station. The schedule of open houses includes: Monday, Citizens' Fire Company on Rowe Street; Tuesday, American Hose Company, Mauch Chunk Street; Wednesday, East End Fire Company, East Broad Street; Thursday, South Ward Fire Company, Van Gelder Street. Open houses will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend any or all of the open houses.
Animal blessing
Calvary Episcopal Church will sponsor a blessing of the animals church service at 10:45 a.m. this Sunday. The church is located at 300 W. Broad St. and the public is welcome to attend.
Pet owners are responsible for the proper control of their animals, as well as taking care of any accidents that may happen.

St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include celebrations of Harvest Home and World Wide Communion Sunday. Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.
The annual Fall Rummage sale will be held next Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Effective parenting
Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, 223 E. Broad St., will sponsor the parenting course "Effective Parenting in a Defective World." Created by Chip Ingram, founder of the international ministry "Living on the Edge," the series offers struggling parents advice on raising children in today's world. The sessions will begin Oct. 7 and continue for the following eight Wednesdays. All sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The course is being offered free of charge and is open to the public. Child care will be available.

Zion Lutheran
The Rev. Debra Ernst will officiate at the 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services. The early service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion and the later service will include the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:30 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, Property Committee at 6:30 p.m., Finance Committee meeting at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Endowment Committee meeting at 9:30 a.m.; Thursday, PERT meeting at 6:30 p.m. and Senior Choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.
