Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile held in Tamaqua on Sept. 23 collected 59 units of the "gift of life." The visit was sponsored by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Volunteers who assisted with the event included: Bob and Dolly Shirey, Phyllis Lane, Jean Stephens, Marilyn Felsoci, John and Florence Bubel, Claudette Zarra, Edie Hoffman, Robert and Darlene Zeckam.

The social hall at St. John United Church of Christ was converted into a blood collection center through the efforts of Randy Gormley, Jack Quinn, Jim Gormley, Jack Rarick and Michale Trubilla.

There was one first time donor Amy Whitley.

TOPS

The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.

Mary Anna Jupina provided an inspirational reading, entitled "Angels," at the Sept. 30 meeting. Members then worked on projects for the Fall Rally, which is scheduled to be held Oct. 17 at Genetti's Hotel, Wilkes-Barre. This year's theme is "Autumn is in the Air."

Recycling

Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.

All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.

Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.

Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.

Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.

Animal rescue

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will meet on Thursday, at 7 p.m., in Tamaqua Borough Hall. The group is in need of volunteer foster parents for the stray dogs they rescue. When animals can't be returned to their families, or have been abandoned, the group has been taking them to the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, a "no kill" shelter. Unfortunately, the Hillside shelter has no room for any more animals at its facility.

Foster homes serve to fill the gap created when the facility is full.

TAAR is an all volunteer group. Funds for food, gas mileage and other related expenses either come from the volunteer's pocket or by fundraising efforts.

SS. Peter and Paul

The Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will meet at 8 p.m. this Thursday. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass, to be celebrated at 7:30 p.m.
