Women's club

The Tamaqua Business and Professional Women's Club held a 62 anniversary party on Oct. 6 at La Dolce Casa Restaurant. Members and guests traveled from Pottsville, Reading and Schuylkill Haven. The theme for the evening was "Facts of the 70s."

Jean Towle, who is also the District 9 BPW Director, provided a program in keeping with the evening's theme.

Diane Lewis, a member of the Reading chapter and Assistant District 9 Director, presented the Tamaqua club members with a clock on behalf of the Coatsville Veterans Hospital. The gift was in appreciation for the club's donation and gifts to the women veterans hospitalized in the facility.

The group discussed participating in the Tamaqua Heritage Festival; the Fall Conference which is scheduled to be held Oct. 17 at the Blu Tavern in Llewellyn; and National Business Week, which will be held Oct. 19-23.

TOPS

The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.

Linda Hosler provided an inspirational reading at the Oct. 7 meeting. Bernie Kunkel was presented the TOPS Loser of the Week Award and Nancy Barron was presented the TOPS Loser of the Month Award for September. Josie Mariani achieved her third quarter goal. Trudy Bartley was the guest speaker. Her topic concerned the mental preparation needed for successful weight loss.

Recycling

Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.

All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.

Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.

Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.

Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.

Rush treats

Rush Township's Trick or Treat Night has been scheduled for Oct. 31, from 6-9 p.m. Residents interested in hosting the little ghouls and goblins are reminded to turn on their porch/outdoor lights.

Class of 1979

The Reunion Committee for the Tamaqua Area High School Class of 1979 will meet Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at Schick's Cafe Calcutta, Mauch Chunk Street. The meeting is open to all class members and will be to discuss plans for the upcoming reunion. The class will celebrate its 30-year reunion on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Tamaqua Elks Lodge.
