Tigers record cross country sweep

The Northwestern cross country team swept its four meet run-off on Wednesday, while Northern Lehigh won five of six in Colonial Lague circles.

CROSS COUNTRY

Northwestern-Catasauqua-Bangor-So. Lehigh-NDES-Moravian-Palisades-Pen Argyl

Lindsay Kerr placed first overall with a time of 19:29 and led her Lady Tigers to four wins on the day. Teammate Kathryn Hallingstad was 42 seconds behind Kerr in third. Fellow Tigers Ramzy Burns (eighth), Megan Handwerk (ninth), Anna Fricchione (11th) and Natalie Boehm (13th) also finished in the top 15.

The local boys were led by Tyler Malay. Malay came in second with a time of 17:45 - just 11 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Cody Reinert and Pat Strobel also finished in seventh and 12th place respectively.

Palmerton-Moravian Academy-No. Dame GP-Saucon Valley-No. Lehigh-Salisbury-Wilson

Northern Lehigh wound up winning all three boys meets and a pair of girls meets, while Palmerton managed wins over Salisbury in their Colonial League competition.

Zach Fleming led the Bulldog boys across the finish line as he finished seventh, while Ryan Fronheiser was ninth, Austin Danish 10th, Aaron Rerick 14th and Scott Shavak 15th.

Aaron Papay led the Bombers as he finished 17th overall.

On the girls side, Steph Pryor was the Bulldogs best finisher as he ended up seventh, while Megan Rex was 10th, Samantha Corcoran 12th and Rachel Barnett 19th.

Palmerton's best finisher was Andrea Stevko, who was 11th.

Tyler Miller scored with 20 minutes left in the second half to lift the Roughies to a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.

Northern Lehigh goalie Corey Snyder had 17 saves in goal, while Tyler Silberman had 10 saves for Catasauqua.

The Bulldogs had a 20-19 edge in shots on goal.

Palmerton-Pen Argyl

The Green Knights scored a pair of goals in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half for a 3-1 win over the Blue Bombers.

Evan Brown scored a pair of goals for Pen Argyl, while Aldo Doscia scored one. Dave Kenion scored the lone Palmerton goal off a Garrett Scott assist.

Pen Argyl had a 12-7 edge in shots on goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Halifax

Mackenzi Bingaman had two goals and one assist and led Halifax to a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Lady Olympians' Chelsea Smelas scored the team's only goal in the second half with 18:20 left. Teammate Caitlin Liscinski on the play.

Halifax had 30 shots on goal, while the Lady Olympians had10.

Krista Bainbridge had sevensaves in the net for Thorpe, while Chelsea Smelas had 11 and Jah Page had 10.

FIELD HOCKEY

Catasauqua-Northern Lehigh

The Lady Bulldogs scored two goals in the second half to pull out a 2-1 win over the Rough Riders in a Colonial League contest.

Taylor Farber and Alyssa Bowers scored for Northern Lehigh, while Danielle Seirzega managed the lone score for Catasauqua.

The Bulldogs also held a 18-3 edge in shots on goal. Nicole Pirosky made two saves for Northern Lehigh.

Northwestern-Bangor

Bangor blanked Northwestern in Colonial League play, as the Slaters scored twice in each half and won 4-0.

Abigail Bakke tallied a hat-trick for Bangor (12-4). The Slaters also held a 25-6 shot advantage.

Northwestern slips to 9-4-1 on the year with the loss.

Pen Argyl-Palmerton

Pen Argyl took a 3-0 lead into halftime and went on to knock off Colonial League foe Palmerton, 5-0.

Kassy Beckage scored twice for the Green Knights. She also had an assist. Teammates Kiersten Young, Jaclyn Parsons and Carly Torgersen added the other goals.

Palmerton goalie Lydia Anthony stopped eight of the 11 shots she faced.

VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-Hazleton

Although Jim Thorpe lost the first game to non-league foe Hazleton, the Lady Olympians came back to take the next three and won 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-12.

The Olympians were led by Meredith Brisbane and Brittany Holland. They each had eight kills.

Teammate Marissa Cantelmi helped out with 23 assists, while Jill Andrews played great defense with 19 digs.

However, Jim Thorpe's JV team lost in three, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11.
