St. Luke's Miners Memorial to hold Halloween safety event

The physicians and nurses of the John E. and Dorothy Morgan Emergency Services Department at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, will host the annual Halloween Safety & Health event on Saturday Oct. 24, from noon to 2 p.m. The event will be held in the rear parking lot of the hospital.

The event offers many activities for children, ages 12 and under, to enjoy. Activities include:

• Pick 'n Decorate a Pumpkin - Children will be able to choose a pumpkin from the St. Luke's Pumpkin Patch and decorate it before taking it home.

• St. Luke's Children's Art Contest - Children may color a Halloween picture and have it displayed in the Emergency Department. Three pieces will be chosen and the winners will be presented with a special gift.

• Fire Safety House - Children will be taught by local firefighters how to recognize fire and burn hazards, prevent fires and what to do in the event of a fire. Plus, see a fire truck up close.

• Bean bag toss - Children will take aim at a giant pumpkin face.

• PennSTAR - See the helicopter land! Then meet the helicopter crew, tour the inside of the helicopter and learn about aeromedical rescue.

• Ambulances - Local ambulance teams will be on hand to display their equipment and explain what they do to help sick and injured people.

• Smokey the Bear - Smokey Bear will be roaming the grounds of St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital to teach you how to prevent forest fires.

• Police Dogs - Meet the K-9 police dog "officers" from the Coaldale and West Penn Police Departments.

• Trick or Treat - All children are invited to "trick or treat" with the residents of St. Luke's Miners Geriatric Center.

• Haunted House - After trick or treating, the residents of the Geriatric Center will welcome children to their haunted house.

• Inflatables - Play on the inflatable combo/slide and jungle bounce.

• Playing It Safe activities - Learn the importance of proper hand-washing and make your own first aid kit.

Popcorn and other refreshments will be available for all "trick or treaters".

The event is geared to children age 12 and under. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone is invited to come in costume and enjoy an afternoon filled with fun, along with safety and health tips. No registration is required; admission is free. Event will be held rain or shine.
