Washed out

For the second time this summer, Mother Nature was the culprit for the cancellation of the joint car show to be hosted by the Tannersville Lions Club and the Western Pocono Lions Club a the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert. She sent so much rain it could not be held. Chief Organizer Jerry Hunsberger says a show will be planned for next year.

Funds realized at that show are used by both clubs for community service.

Women's Resources

Women's Resources, STOP Abuse Clubs and groups have joined agencies across the nation in the recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Local efforts to commune with survivors and victims while educating the community-at-large continue as follows: Oct. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Stroudsburg, "Providing Spiritual Support & Direction; When Domestic Violence is Present" training for the community's clergy, religious and spiritual leaders on Domestic Violence related issue; Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Stroudsburg's Courthouse Square a "Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil" honoring victims and survivors of domestic violence and the community that cares, will be held.

Anyone needing more information about the activities or the services provided by Women's Resources can call the agency's business line.

Blood drive

Effort UMC will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 1-6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22. For more information, call (570) 629-1980.

School board

The Pleasant Valley Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, at the district office in Brodheadsville.

West End Rotary

The Rotary will not meet this Thursday morning. Instead they will be hosting a Membership Mixer Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Luna Rossa Café. Everyone is invited, especially business men and women, to attend to learn more about Rotary and its commitment to community service. It will be an opportunity to network and socialize.

Reformation Sunday

Churches throughout the area, particularly Lutheran ones, will be observing Reformation Sunday on Oct. 25. Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville will have Social Hour after its 10:30 a.m. worship service. All Saints Sunday will be celebrated Nov. 1.

DS visits

Effort United Methodist Church will have its charge conference Monday, Oct. 27. District superintendent, the Rev. Bron Yocum, will chair the meeting. She is getting to know the West End churches more as she visited St. Peter's UMC and McMichaels UMC for her official visit last week.

Continued service

St. John's Lutheran in Effort has announced that Pastor Stivers will be serving the congregation another year.

In-Gathering

The Pocono Mission District of the ELCA will be holding its fall festival and In-gathering at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1, at Faith Lutheran Church in Blakeslee.
