Golden Agers
At the Oct. 12 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers, the October and November birthday celebrants were honored as they sat around a table decorated with a Fall theme. Porvaznik Flowers donated the centerpiece which was won of Betty Marek. Kennedy Pharmacy donated the cake and key chains. Happy Birthday was sung by the members and Irene Hudasky led the sing-a-long.
Vice President Shirley Pavlick gave a report on those on the sick list.
New member Nanci Bokeko from Tamaqua was introduced and welcomed. Dues are now being collected for 2010. Anyone 55 and older is welcomed to join.
The next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 26 beginning at 1 p.m. Chorus practice is now being held at St. Joseph's Hall in Summit Hill at 11:30 a.m. Bingo and card games are available.
JROTC
The monthly meeting of the Panther Valley JROTC will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in the JROTC room. Election of officers will take place.
Nesquehoning
VFW auxiliary
There will be a special meeting of the ladies auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 on Tuesday, Oct. 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nominations for the office of treasurer will be accepted at this meeting. President Cathy Sommers will preside at the session. All members are invited to attend.
The audit committee will meet on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. All members are welcome to attend the meeting. Both meetings will be held at the post home.
Tax office
The tax office of Patricia Vito will be closed from Oct. 20-23. It will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Summit Hill
Historical society
The Summit Hill Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in the museum on East Ludlow Street. A group of local "privy diggers" will be presenting items found from their recent digs.
Upcoming events, including the Halloween Open House and election of officers for 2010, will be discussed. President Maxine Vermillion will be in charge of the business meeting.
New members are always welcome to attend.
Water authority
The Summit Hill Water Authority will hold its monthly meeting tonight at 7 o'clock in the borough hall. John Michalik, president, will be in charge.
Lighting of graves
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, has announced plans for its annual Lighting of the Graves observance for All Souls and All Saints days. The ceremony serves to remind church members and friends of those who have passed away.
On Saturday, Oct. 31, the lighting of the luminaries at the parish's White Bear cemetery will take place after the 4 p.m. Mass.
On Sunday, Nov. 1, the lighting will take place at 6 p.m. at the parish's Summit Hill cemetery.
The preparation of the luminaries will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 28, beginning at 6 p.m. in the church hall.
Election dates
The General Election in Carbon County and Summit Hill will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The Jeffersonian Democratic Club, Summit Hill, reminds voters of the following deadlines:
Last day to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 27.
Last day for the county Board of Elections to receive absentee ballot is Oct. 30.

Tax office closed
The office of Alice Kane, Summit Hill tax collector, will be closed Thursday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 23. It will reopen on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and Friday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Mail-ins will be accepted.
Lansford
Trick or Treat Night
Trick or Treat Night will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, in the Borough of Lansford. Residents are asked to keep porch lights on for Trick-or-Treaters between 6-8 p.m.
