South Ward news

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee met Oct. 15 in the manager's office. Chairwoman Louise Howells conducted the meeting. Updates were provided on the September Clean Up Campaign and the Chinese Auction.

The Carriage Street Stairway Project was discussed and construction will begin as soon as the contractor, Berger Construction, has a crew available. Blueprints and details of the renovation of the South Ward Playground have been finalized. Bid specifications are being prepared and will be advertised for Spring construction. As part of the project, a memorial brick walkway is being considered. Manager Kathy Kunkle sees the engraved bricks as a way to honor the playground's history, both for those whose volunteer efforts through the years have kept the playground as the ward's central point, as well as the generations of children who have passed through its gates. Information on creating such a walkway is being collected.

The SWNC will team up with the South Ward Playground Association to conduct a safe Trick or Treat night on Oct. 31. Residents are welcome to bring their Halloween treats to the playground and set up a table. There will also be arrangements for those unable to attend, but still willing to have their treats distributed to the little ghouls and goblins. SWNC Chairwoman Louise Howells suggests participating residents place a sign on their doors, directing youngsters to the playground area. Pre-registration is suggested to ensure there will be enough tables available.

For more information, on trick or treat night or the memorial brick program, call Kathy at (570) 668-4804 or 668-1251.
