Free safety seat check-up scheduled

Published October 05. 2009 02:55PM

It's September, time for parents to ramp up the road time spent ferrying children to and from school, sports and other activities. Pennsylvania State Police, Safe Kids Carbon County, and Carbon County State Health Center want children to be safe, and so they have scheduled a free safety seat check-up from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the Wal-Mart on Blakeslee Boulevard in Lehighton.

The event, which will be held rain or shine, is part of an ongoing effort to educate families about the importance of properly restraining children in motor vehicles.

Parents are encouraged to have their seats already installed prior to coming to these events so that a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician can check the seat for proper installation and use. Technicians checking the seats are certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and will provide instructions to those who are not using their child safety seat correctly. Pennsylvania law requires every child from birth to age 8 must ride in an approved child safety seat or booster seat while in a motor vehicle.

The check-up, sponsored by Pennsylvania State Police Troop N, Hazleton, Safe Kids Carbon County, and Carbon County State Health Center, is part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from Sept. 12-18.
