Rotary program
West End Rotary Club will welcome Debra Youngfelt, health educator, at the club's breakfast meeting, Thursday, Sept. 24. She will present a "Skin Cancer Education Program."
Lions Outreach
On the first two weekends of October, the Western Pocono Lions Club members will be at various local businesses collecting funds for White Cane. White Cane collections are used to fund the various Lions sight-related agencies.
On Oct. 10, the Lions will be transporting residents of area personal care homes for a fall ride in the country.
Working with the Tannersville Lions, the club will be holding a car show at the West End Fair Grounds in Gilbert on Sunday, Oct. 18. For registration information contact Lion Jerry Hunsberger at (570) 629-1412.
At the club's regular monthly meeting at The Hamilton on Oct. 21, District Governor Bob Neumoyer of the four-county area will address the group on the changing world of Lionism. Lions District Rally
Several members of the Western Pocono Lions Club and the Effort Lions Club attended the Lions 14U District Rally held in Jim Thorpe last week. Among the travelers from the Effort Lions Club were Joyce and Marvin Aylsworth.
Representing the Western Pocono Lions Club were PCC Chris Sweeney and his wife Rita, club President Helen Koshensky, Immediate Past President Herman Green, Lion Mary Jane Lucrezi, and Immediate Past District Governor Bob Argot and his wife.
Used eye glasses anyone?
Collecting eyeglasses for persons in need in the United States and abroad is a Lions Club service provided by many Lions Clubs, Western Pocono Lions Club among them.
Herman Green is chairperson of that project for the club and to early September he has counted 1,228 pair. More can be used.
To donate, look for the donation containers in various banks, stores and other locations, including a big mailbox look-alike in front of Kinsley's ShopRite in Brodheadsville.
Food pantries need you
At last week's meeting of the six formal food pantries in Monroe County, it was announced that over 1,250 individuals were helped in August. That total does not include individual church-run pantries such as at Effort UMC or other churches.
With fall and winter coming, the numbers will continue to rise and more help is needed.
The Boy Scouts will be holding their annual food drive in November, with bags going out Nov. 7 and being collected Nov. 14. Food pantry directors hope the Monroe County community will be generous. Anyone with questions can call the local Scout Troop, Pack or food pantry.
Donation reception
Back Door Books in Brodheadsville reminds area residents that it will only accept donations during regular business hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, as well as 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursdays.
Friday hours are terminated for the fall season.
Donations must be in mint condition and a volunteer will be on had to check them. If items are not acceptable, the person bringing them is responsible for taking them elsewhere.
Community Day
Ross Township is hosting the first Community Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, at the VanBuskirk-Haney Park, next to the township building on Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg. It is sponsored by the township supervisors and features activities for kids, nonprofit organizations, music, food and a "Water Wonders and Wanderers" program with naturalist and educator, Don Miller.
