Marian graduate Ryan seeing time for UConn

Mike Ryan, a 2007 Marian High School graduate, is starting to see some playing time with the University of Connecticut's first-string offensive line.

Ryan, a redshirt sophomore tackle, saw playing time in the Huskies' first two games this season, primarily on special teams. He received more significant game action in UConn's 30-22 victory over Baylor this past Saturday.

Ryan and redshirt freshman guard Erik Kuraczea were both signaled out by UConn head coach Randy Edsall after the game.

"We felt on the offensive line that Erik Kuraczea and Mike Ryan had come along. We wanted to see what they could do in the game," Edsall told the Connecticut Post. "We're always trying to get the best players on the field. We felt they had a chance to be the best players on the field so we did that."

Ryan is expected to stay in the Huskies' rotation this week against Rhode Island.

"We'll probably continue along the same lines as what we did this past weekend," Edsall said in regard to the offensive line.

Lehighton High School graduate Robbie Frey, also a redshirt sophomore at UConn, continues to see action on special teams. Frey was credited with one tackle against Baylor.

For the season, Frey has six kickoff returns for 143 yards (23.8 average) and has also made three tackles.
