No seating for handicapped people at football games

Published October 05. 2009 02:55PM

Did you know that there is nowhere for handicapped people to sit during the football games on the home side in Tamaqua?

They used to be allowed down by the fence but now they are chased (since they redid the track and fencing).

I know of at least one person in a wheelchair that attends the games regularly. The only place they can sit on the home side is where it is almost impossible to see anything on the field.

Sure they could go and sit on the "away" side but who wants to go and sit with a bunch of strangers?

We took my dad up to the first game. He loves to attend the games, not only to watch football but to see his granddaughter playing her Baritone in the band. He uses one of those walkers with the built-in seat. The steps are hard for him. We thought this would work out great since he could just sit down there and wouldn't need to try and negotiate the bleachers.

He ended up sitting way over by the far side by the Band Boosters stand, where he was chased to by the guards.

I think that this is a terrible thing. All that money to fix the stadium up and nowhere for disabled people to sit and actually enjoy watching the game and the bands.

I believe Tamaqua Area should look into finding a way for these people to be able to attend the games and enjoy them. We should be taking care of our own.

My dad has lived In Tamaqua for over 40 years and has raised 4 children here and now finds himself pushed in a corner.
