Bears, Bombers win in softball, soccer

Pleasant Valley and Palmerton both posted wins in softball and soccer to highlight Monday's scholastic sports action.

BASEBALL

Saucon Vy.-No. Lehigh

Saucon Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, as the Panthers knocked off Northern Lehigh 10-7 in Colonial League play.

Joe Dugan led the Bulldogs (7-3, 6-1) with four hits. He had three singles, a double and two RBIs. Teammates Joe Seremula and Kirk Bender each had two RBIs as well.

Leading Northern Lehigh in RBIs was Matt Gill with three. He also had three singles and two runs scored.

Southern Lehigh took advantage of some loose defensive play by Northwestern to post a 13-6 Colonial League victory.

The Tigers (5-5, 3-4), who hurt themselves with eight errors in the game, did get big games from Peyton Bachman and Colton Breininger. Bachman had three hits, including a home run, and knocked in two runs. Breininger belted a two-run homer.

Notre Dame GP-Palmerton

Notre Dame of Green Pond held Palmerton to just two hits in its Colonial League baseball game and went on to win, 2-0.

The Bombers received three singles from Christian Marcin, Tyler Hahn and Travis Labyack.

Williams Valley-Marian

Williams Valley got the best of Marian in a battle of teams with unbeaten Schuylkill League records, cruising to an 11-2 victory.

The Vikings (8-0, 6-0) rode the standout pitching of Tyler Herb, who allowed four hits and struck out 15. Herb also helped himself with the bat as he belted a home run. Sean Collins and Kegan Bettinger also belted homers for WV.

For Marian (6-2, 5-1), Drew Sherkness provided the offense with a two-run sixth inning home run. Mark Stawick had a single and a run scored.

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove

Pine Grove's Ryan Boyer outdueled Jim Thorpe's Pat Janecki as the Cardinals pulled out a 4-1 Schuylkill League victory.

Boyer tossed a one-hitter and struck out 12. Janecki was also extremely sharp as he fired a four-hitter, fanned nine, and allowed no earned runs.

The Olympians (1-8, 0-4) got their only run in the first inning when Zac Knox walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Janecki grounded out.

Pleasant Valley-Nazareth

Pleasant Valley scored three runs in the final two innings, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell to Nazareth 5-3 in non-league play.

Mahanoy Area scored early and often and went on to defeat Weatherly, 11-1 in six innings.

Weatherly's Dylan McDonald had the team's only extra-base hit, which was a double.

Schuylkill Haven's Phill Dohner struck out 13 en route to leading his team to a 1-0 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Kyle McAvoy had two of Panther Valley's three hits. He had a single and a double. Teammate Casey Lawrence had the other hit.

The Panthers are now 5-3.

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain's Mark Harding came through in the clutch, as he delivered with a RBI single in the bottom of the seveth to help his Eagles to a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Eric James was responsible for the Raiders' lone run. He singled in a runner from second in the third.

Despite getting the loss, Trevor Reinhardt pitched well for Tamaqua (3-5, 2-2). He fanned seven batters and walked only two in six innings of work.

In a low scoring affar, Southern Lehigh held on to beat Colonial League foe Northwestern 2-1.

Lauren Horner and Katie Tanred each had two hits for the Tigers. One of Tanred's hits was a triple. She also had two RBIs.

ND-Palmerton

Michelle Rickert drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to propel her Lady Bombers to a 2-1 win over Notre Dame of Green Pond.

Palmerton was led by the pitching of Martina Herring, who threw a two-hitter on the day.

Williams Vy.-Marian

Alysha Bixler struck out four and fired a one-hitter as Williams Valley posted a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Marian.

The Vikings hit three homers, including three-run shots by Lacey Bixler and Courtney Machamer during an eight-run, two-out rally in the fourth inning that broke the game open and led to the mercy rule win.

Alexa Nemeth had the only hit for the Fillies (4-4, 3-3).

Pleasant Valley handed the Nazareth softball team its first loss of the year, as the Lady Bears defeated the Blue Eagles 2-1.

The Bears' Megan Fitzgerald fanned seven on her way to earning the victory. Fitzgerald's catcher, Jordan Borger, helped out with a RBI.

Schuylkill Haven tallied 11 runs in the first three innings in its Schuylkill League match-up with Panther Valley and went on to win, 12-2 in five innings.

Rosie Bauer and Karolina Vavra each had RBI singles for the Lady Panthers. Teammate Demi Ogozalek had two singles as well.

Meghan Kisela struck out 12 and tossed a complete-game four-hitter as Blue Mountain rolled to an 11-2 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Kisela also belted a home run while Sam Reed added three hits for the Eagles.

Emily Zancofsky had two hits and scored a run for Tamaqua.

Kutztown held Lehighton scoreless in its non-league soccer game, winning 2-0.

Ashley Landis and Amy Mucelli each scored a goal for the Cougars (7-0-1).

No. Lehigh-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl rolled to an 8-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Brianna DiFelice and Brandi VanPatten both had a pair of goals for the Green Knights.

Megan Kutchera accounted for the Bulldogs' lone goal.

Pen Argyl had a 31-3 advantage in shots. Northern Lehigh goalie Emily Mulcahy made 23 saves.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Palmerton's Cindy George scored the only goal of the game in the first half and led the Lady Bombers to a 1-0 shutout of Catty.

The Bombers go to 3-5 on the year.

Stroudsburg-Pleas. Vy.

With just over three minutes having elapsed in double overtime, Pleasant Valley's Kayla Dorney found Maggie Patterson for the game-winning goal and helped the Bears win 1-0.

Dorney tapped a pass over a defenders' head right to Patterson, who was left one-on-one with the goalie. Patterson fired from about seven yards out and got it to go for the clincher.

Pleasant Valley improves to 8-2 (6-0).
