Berks cyclist killed in Schuylkill crash
A Berks County motorcyclist was killed and his passenger seriously injured in a crash in Schuylkill County that occurred about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the intersection of SR209 and SR901, in Norwegian Township.
State police at Schuylkill Haven said Mary Aungst, 70, of Tremont, was driving a 2008 Jeep westbound on 901 intending to turn left onto southbound 209. She failed to see a 1991 Yamaha motorcyle traveling eastbound on 901 and turned directly into the path of the bike.
The bike struck the passenger side door of the Jeep, troopers said. The bike driver, Darren Martin, 47, and his passenger, Cheryl Martin, 47, both of Bernville, were ejected from the bike.
Darren Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Cheryl Martin was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, with what troopers called traumatic injuries. Aungst was not injured but a 11-year-old female passenger from Pine Grove sustained a minor head injury and lacerations. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The intersection was shutdown for a period of time.
