Nesquehoning

Lions club

The Nesquehoning Lions Club has planned its meeting for Monday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the club building. There will be no dinner at this meeting.

Fishing derby

Children of the surrounding area are invited to the Nesquehoning Conservation Club's annual Fishing Derby on May 8. The registration is at 8 a.m. in the parking lot near CVS on Locust Street.

Each child will receive a prize and first place will be a $250 gift card to Cabela's.

The derby is held in memory of the late Connell McCall and Juvenile Diabetes and is supported by the Friends of Connell McCall.

There will be food and drink available.

Conservation club

The May Meeting of the Nesquehoning Conservation Club will be Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m.at Maple Shade Meadows. This will be the last meeting before the Kids Fishing Derby on May 8 and the last meeting until September.

Members who cannot attend but would like to volunteer to help at the derby can contact derby chairman Don McGorry at (570) 669-9163.

Summit Hill

Annual campaign

The Diligence Fire Company No. 1, Summit Hill, has announced its annual fund drive for 2010. The drive is the company's major source of income and assists the company in capital expenses, including truck loan payments, equipment and operational expenses.

Included in the fund drive mailing is a donor survey form. The firemen are asking residents to complete the form to allow them to have more information about households in the event they are summoned. Information about elderly persons, handicapped individuals, pets, etc., helps the firemen have a better understanding of what they can expect to find upon response.

Residents can mail their donation and survey form to the fire company or they can be dropped off at the borough hall, John's Auto or Breslin's Hilltop News.

SHCIO to meet

The Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in the Summit Hill Borough Hall. The next meeting is scheduled for May 3. Debra Ranck, president, will be in charge of the session.

Legion to meet

The monthly meeting of American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will be held on Monday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the post home. Commander W. Kevin O'Donnell will be in charge of the session, during which time plans for the upcoming Memorial Day parade and services will be discussed.

A meeting of the Home Association will immediately follow the post's meeting.

Council meeting

The Summit Hill Borough Council has changed the date of its monthly meetings to the second Monday. The next meeting is scheduled for May 10 at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Joseph Weber, president, will be in charge of the session.

Old cell phones

The Summit Hill Lions Club is collecting old and unwanted cell phones. They can be working or non-working and can be dropped off at the home of Tom and Janel Tirpak, 2 E. Walter St., Summit Hill, or Northeast Chemical and Supply Company, Lansford, or they can be given to members of the club.

Heritage center

The Summit Hill Heritage Center, the former St. Paul United Church of Christ, is operated by a nonprofit organization and currently houses the Summit Hill Food Bank and serves as a meeting place for the local Boy Scouts and for yoga classes.

Future plans include formation of a Girl Scout troop and the hosting of music programs, cultural events and fun nights for the young and old.

Summit Hill H.S. Class of 1957

The Summit Hill High School Class of 1957 will hold a reunion luncheon at noon on Thursday, May 27 at Macaluso's at the Lantern on Route 209 in Nesquehoning.

Invitations have been sent to all class members. Those who have not responded are asked to contact Ann Marie Pisklak Lill at (570) 645-2410 by Friday, May 7.

Lee Mantz, president of the Summit Hill Historical Society, will be the featured speaker following the luncheon. He will speak about the borough's history, with emphasis on the class' alma mater Summit Hill High School, which was built nearly a century ago in 1911.

The 1 p.m. luncheon will be preceded at noon by a reception featuring hors d'oeuvre and a cash bar.

During the post-luncheon program, the eight deceased members of the 42-member class will be remembered in a memorial presided over by Walter Williams.

First Congregational Church

Morning Worship will be conducted at First Congregational Church at 9 a.m. Sunday May 2, followed by Sunday School at 10 a.m.

Nursing home services will be held at St. Luke's Miners at 11 a.m. and at Maple Shade, Nesquehoning, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5. Choir rehearsal will take place at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

A Mother's Day Service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 9, with Sunday School at 10 a.m.
