The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will get a bit of a head start on the new school year, meeting on Aug. 9. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., in the school library. Parents/grandparents with students in grades kindergarten through five in either Tamaqua or Rush Elementary Schools are welcome to attend.

The main topic for discussion will be school year activities sponsored by the parent-teacher organizations at both schools.

Classes for the 2010-2011 school year will begin Aug. 30, with the exception of kindergarten classes.

Kindergarten orientation will be held Aug. 30 and 31. Parents will be notified by mail of kindergarten orientation dates and times.

For students in grades one through five, orientation will be held according to the following schedule: Rush Elementary, Aug. 3, from 6-7 p.m.; Tamaqua Elementary School, Aug. 3, from 7-8 p.m.; and at West Penn Elementary on Aug. 4, from 6-7 p.m.

Board of Health

The August meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Barron provided his monthly report, noting he made spot check inspections at Mundy's Pub, Martha's Place, M and I Deli, Citizen's Fire Company, China Moon and J R's Tavern. He also received and adjusted seven complaints: five for trash/garbage and two for infestation.

There were no cases of reportable disease for the month of July.

St. John UCC

The Rev. Kevin Duffy Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. service this Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ. Nursery care is available during the service.

The weekly service is broadcast on radio station WLSH, AM1410, at 11:30 a.m. Sundays.

Zion Lewistown

The Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school for all ages is held at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, there will be a worship service at the ABC Tamaqua Hi Rise at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m., Playground Pals at 11:30 a.m. and GriefShare at 1:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Waterside Whistle Stop at 2:30 p.m., Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., Prayer and Bible study at 6:30 p.m.: Friday, TYM will hold its TGIF lock in, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
