Carbon driver facing DUI count

A Carbon County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following an incident that started in Nesquehoning and ended with a vehicle stop by Jim Thorpe police.

Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith reported on July 28 about 10:08 a.m. he was dispatched for a report of an erratic driver along SR93 south in the borough. The report to the communications center was from a driver behind a Dodge Caliber who said the vehicle was "all over the road" and almost struck several oncoming vehicles head-on.

As Smith responded it was reported the vehicle had turned left onto SR209 headed toward Jim Thorpe. Smith notified the communications center to contact Jim Thorpe police concerning the vehicle.

Officer Lee Marzen spotted the vehicle in Jim Thorpe and followed it for a distance observing it weaving in traffic and going through a posted PennDOT construction zone. Marzen stopped the vehicle on top of the Mansion House Hill at the former Big Chief restaurant. Smith arrived a minute or two later.

The driver was identified as Rebecca A. Strohl, 22, of 100 E. Penn St., Lehighton. She smelled of an alcoholic beverage and showed signs of intoxication. She at first denied drinking but then admitted drinking one Vodka and cranberry juice drink after work.

She failed the sobriety field tests and was placed under arrest and transported to the Lehighton hospital for a blood test. The test results showed she had a .13BAC.

Smith charged her with two counts of DUI and a summary offense of driving on roadways laned for traffic.
