State police warn of lottery scam

Published August 19. 2010 05:00PM

State police at Frackville are warning residents of the Rush and East Brunswick township areas of a lottery scam.

Troopers said at least two citizens of those townships reported receiving telephone calls instructing them to wire a sum of money to Jamaica, West Indies, to secure and retrieve lottery winnings. This is a fraud, long perpetrated by transient criminals, and usually escaping prescution, troopers warned.

Anyone receiving such calls should not entertain the caller and immediately report the call to their local police, troopers urged. Additionally, with any unsolicited calls or visits, do not let strangers into your home or allow them to talk you into going outside or furnish any personal information such as dates of birth, social security numbers, bank or credit card numbers, troopers advised.
