Facing charges in Summit Hill

Published August 23. 2010 05:00PM

Matthew D. Miller, 28, of 411 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is facing charges of failing to stop for vehicle violations and driving while intoxicated.

Miller was cited as the result of an incident which occurred on Aug. 7.

Patrolman David Midas said in his affidavit that at 2:22 a.m. on that date, he was nearly struck head-on on Ludlow Street by another vehicle.

He said the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed toward Pine Street. Midas followed with the lights flashing on the police cruiser and Miller failing to stop.

Miller allegedly continued on Route 902 at a high rate of speed toward White Bear Drive, and turned east onto White Bear Drive. The vehicle stopped near the cemetery along White Bear Drive in the travel lane.

Midas writes in the affidavit, "I exited my cruiser and quickly approached the driver's side of the vehicle. The operator looked at me and his vehicle began to roll forward off the road into some trees. I reached in the driver side window with my feet off the ground yelling for the driver to break. After getting the vehicle to a stop, I removed the driver from the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs for safety."

Midas stressed there was not a high-speed chase.

He said he was assisted by Officer Curillas of the Summit Hill Police Department as well as officers from the Lansford and Jim Thorpe police departments.
