Crashes on I81
State police at Frackville reported on two crashes probed along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County on Sunday, Dec. 12.
The first crash occurred just after midnight in Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Warren C. Boyes, 57, of Peachtree City, Ga., was driving a 1997 BMW Z23 northbound when he lost control on the ice-covered road. The car went onto the east berm and struck an embankment with the front end. It then rolled over onto its roof and came to rest along the berm.
Boyes was injured and taken to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. He was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
The second crash occurred about 1:15 a.m. also in Mahanoy Township. Troopers said Joseph F. Kayes, 56, of Shenandoah, was southbound in a 2000 Mack truck spreading salt on the road. Timothy M. Wirtz, 35, of Mahanoy City, was also southbound in a 2005 Honda Civic. Wirtz failed to see the truck ahead of him and struck the rear with the front of his car. After impact the Honda continued across both southbound lanes and struck an embankment with the front end where it came to rest.
No one was injured. Troopers said Wirtz was cited for drivng a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.
