Pedestrian struck in Schuylkill

A pedestrian, who was involved in a crash and had exited his vehicle to check on the other driver, was struck by another vehicle. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred about 3:37 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, along Second Mountain Road, in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said Rosemarie Rothermel, 43, of Orwigsburg, was driving a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound and negotiating a right curve when she swerved to avoid another vehicle in her travel lane and another vehicle in the oncoming lane, both of which were previously involved in a "fender-bender" type crash, troopers said.

As Rothermel swerved to avoid the vehicles her car struck Dean F. Shade, 50, of Tremont, who had exited his 2010 Hyundai Tiburan to check on the other driver involved in the first crash.

Shade sustained injuries to his legs and head and was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville, for treatment. No one else was injured, troopers said.

Troopers also investigated a crash about 12:18 p.m. on Tuesday along Tumbling Run Road in North Manheim Township. Troopers said Charles Frederick, 31, of Cressona, was driving a 1992 Mazda Miata eastbound and negotiating a slight right curve when he drove over a large patch of ice, which was across both lanes of travel for a distance of about 40 feet.

Frederick lost control of his car, which began to spin clockwise and slid off the road sideways. The rear left tire of the car struck a guide rail, then the side of the front left fender hit a tree.

Frederick was not injured but his vehicle had to be towed from the scene, troopers added.
