Marian and Tamaqua posted victories on Monday to remain unbeaten in girls basketball play.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-Mahanoy Area

Gillian Ferko and Kaycee Gutsie scored 14 and 11 points respectively and helped Marian knock off Mahanoy Area, 44-26, in a Schuylkill League Division III game.

Th Fillies (5-0, 2-0) Corrine Markiewicz chipped in with nine points. Marian led by 19 points at halftime.

Marian won the JV game, 27-19.

Tamaqua-N. Schuylkill

Amy Zehner posted another double-double for the Lady Raiders with 23 points and 13 rebounds and led her team to a 56-47 Schuylkill League Division I victory at North Schuylkill.

Allie Updike added 13 points for Tamaqua (4-0, 1-0), which pulled away from a halftime tie.

Zehner moved into fourth place on the Lady Raider all-time scoring list with 1,384 points She surpassed Wendy Truskey (1,380).

North Schuylkill won the JV contest, 28-25.

Nativity-Weatherly

Nativity marched out to a 32-19 halftime lead and never looked back, beating Weatherly 67-39 in a Schuylkill League Division III contest.

The Hilltoppers' Nikki Farr led all scorers with 22 points. She knocked down six three-pointers in the process.

The Lady Wreckers (1-3, 0-2) were paced by Brittany Hinkle's 15 points. Teammate Tracy Galada added 12.

Nativity also won the JV game, 38-33.

The Lady Olympians put a hurting on Williams Valley Saturday night, posting a 63-24 non-league win.

Celeste Robinson had a huge night for Jim Thorpe, as she went 6-of-7 from the free throw line and finished with 30 points. Teammate Chelsea Smelas added 19 in the lopsided win.

WRESTLING

Midd-West Mustang Duals

Lehighton was a perfect 5-0 on Saturday in the Midd-West Mustang Duals.

The Indians defeated East Juniata, Halifax, Newport, Schuylkill Haven and Williams Valley. Except the Newport match, all of the victories were by at least 20 points.

Jacob Hoats, Kurtis Brownmiller, Jason McEvoy and Mitch Moyer all went 5-0 for the Indians with McEvoy picking up a team-best three pins. Nick Schaeffer, Anthony Farole and Zach Coleman all had four wins on the day.

Indian River Tournament

Pleasant Valley crowned four champions at the Battle at the Beach Tournament at Indian River High School in Delaware over the weekend.

The quartet of Bears taking home gold medals included Sean Bianco (112), Ernie Klingel (125), Michael Dahlstrom (130) and Alex Yanovich (135).

Kenny Yanovich (103) placed third, Hunter Deihl (215) fifth and David Gehr (140) seventh for the Bears.

Pleasant Valley finished third in the team standings with 170 points. Dallastown won the team title with 189 points.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

9th GRADE

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Tamaqua defeated Jim Thorpe, 71-42.

Brett Kosciolek scored a game high 21 points, while Adam Bates had 14 points and Zac Wargula added 9.

Ryan Saunders had a team-high 11 points for the Olympians.

8th GRADE

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Tamaqua ran away from Jim Thorpe, 59-24

The Raiders were led by Brett Kosciolek (14), Boez Rottet (9) and Devin Murphy (8).

Jake Saxon and Ken Bombolia both had seven for the Olympians.

ES North-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley used a 16-2 run in the second quarter to defeat Eastburg North, 44-28.

Elijah Gonzalez and Eric Mikulski led the Bears (3-0) with 10 points apiece.
