Man falls asleep driving on I-81

State police at the Frackville barracks said Dylan P. Biter, 18, of Bethany, Conn., was uninjured when he fell asleep while driving a 2000 Subaru Forrester on Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township on Dec. 18 at 5:45 a.m.

Police said he was northbound in the area of mile marker 131.9 in the township and was in the left lane of travel when he fell asleep. The vehicle traveled into the median, went down the ditch and impacted several trees.

Two passengers, Andrew Handverger, 20, of Framingham, Mass., and Nicole E. Testa, 19, of Coventry, R.I., were also uninjured.

Police said Biter will be charged with careless driving.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Citizens Fire Company, West End Fire and Rescue Squad and the EMS unit, all of Mahanoy City.
