The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Jan. 20 at the Beacon Diner, Hometown. Marie Umbriac provided a presentation on fire safety and prevention for homes and hotels.
The chapter discussed plans for a Valentine's visit to the Geriatric Center at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, on Feb. 17. In addition to games and prizes, the event will include the crowning of a Valentine King and Queen. Also discussed were ways and means projects, including a pre-teen dance and a clothing drive. All proceeds will benefit the chapter's service projects, including the community Easter egg hunt.
The next meeting will be this Wednesday and will include the Secret Sister Valentine celebration. The event will be held at Romano's Restaurant, Snyders. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Members will exchange Secret Sister gifts.
Haiti relief
Tamaqua's Methodist Churches have responded to the plight of Haitians affected by last month's devastating earthquake by constructing more than 80 health kits which will be distributed in the ravaged country. Each kit contains a towel, washcloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb, nail clipper and bandages. Distribution will be made through UMCOR United Methodist Committee on Relief.
In addition, Salem United and First United Methodist Churches collected a sizeable cash donation to help restore the lives of the many survivors.
TOPS
The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.

Recycling
Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.
All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.
Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.
Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.
Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.
