Glider pilot 'runs out of air,' lands in West Penn Township

West Penn Township police are investigating the emergency landing of a glider in a field in the township Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Blue Mountain Drive. Area residents reported seeing the craft go down but at first reported the craft as being a hang glider. Upon investigating, township police officer Melissa Johnson found the craft about 50 yards off the roadway in a large cleared field. The pilot, Paul Seifried of Rivervale, N.J., who was not injured in the incident, told emergency responders he and numerous glider enthusiasts had lifted off from Blairstown, N.J. at 11:30 a.m. Seifried said they take advantage of the air currents above the Blue Mountain and glide from New Jersey to Hawk Mountain, circle and return. He stated some make the trip as many as three times a day. Seifried said he "just ran out of air" and had to make the emergency landing. Responding were the West Penn Fire Company No. 1 and Penn Mahoning ambulance.
