Sorority news
Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Feb. 3 at Romano's Restaurant, Snyders. The meeting included a Secret Sister Valentine's gift exchange.
During the business session, members discussed plans to visit the Geriatric Center at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, on Feb. 17. In addition to refreshments and games for the residents, a Valentine's King and Queen will be crowned.
The Ways and Means Committee provided information on upcoming events, including a preteen dance on March 12 and a used clothing collection the weekend of May 14-16. All proceeds are used to fund community service projects, such as an annual scholarship and the Community Easter Egg Hunt, held annually on the weekend before Easter.
The next meeting will be held Feb. 17.
SS. Peter and Paul
Next week's Mass schedule in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will have two changes. Masses on Monday and Wednesday will be celebrated at 8 a.m. instead of in the afternoons.
Feb. 17 marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday blessing and distribution of ashes will be held during the 8 a.m. Mass, as well as after the 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross.
Also next week, choir rehearsal will be held at 7:30 p.m.
St. John UCC
The Rev. Kevin Duffy-Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. service this Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ. Nursery service will be provided. The service will be followed by a time of fellowship. The weekly service will be broadcast on radio station WLSH, 1410 AM, at 11:30 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the choir will rehearse at 10:30 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Wednesday, Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 p.m.
Class of 2010
The Decorating Committee for the Parents of the Tamaqua Class of 2010 meets every Monday, at 7 p.m., on the third floor of the Tamaqua Elks, 301 W. Broad St. Members continue working on decorations for the annual All Night Party.
Trinity UCC
The Rev. Dr. David Grant will officiate at the 10 a.m. worship service this Transfiguration of our Lord Sunday in Trinity United Church of Christ. The service will include words for young Christians and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Nursery care is available during the service. Sunday school classes will meet at 8:45 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Ash Wednesday, service with Holy Communion at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, Confirmation class meets at 4 p.m. and Senior Choir rehearsal will be at 6 p.m.
Lenten services
The Tamaqua Ministeriam will sponsor a series of Community Lenten services for the next six Wednesdays. The Ash Wednesday service will be held Feb. 17 at First United Methodist Church.
The remainder of the services will be held as follows: Feb. 24, Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church; March 3, Primitive Methodist Church; March 10, First United Methodist Church; March 17, Salvation Army; March 24, St. Jerome Catholic Church.
Each service will begin at noon and will be followed by a light luncheon.
The Community Good Friday service will be held April 2, at noon, in Trinity United Church of Christ.
Recycling
Due to the heavy snowfall this week, there will not be any recycling pick up until the next regularly scheduled date. Feb. 17.
Zion Lutheran
The Rev. Debra Ernst will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion and will be followed by a congregational meeting and brunch. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, Council meeting at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Ash Wednesday service with Holy Communion 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, Senior Choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Mutual ministry meeting at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Good News Club Winter Carnival at 2 p.m.
