Democracy disaster

Published February 13. 2010 09:00AM

Dear Editor:

The Supreme Court decision allowing special interest groups to spend unlimited funds on elections is likely to be a disaster for the institution of democracy by allowing corporations to essentially rig elections to their benefit and to the detriment of American citizens.

For example the plastics industry lobby could contribute countless millions to candidates who oppose regulations that would prohibit or reduce the use of carcinogenic additives like bisphenol-A in food packaging. The result is millions of Americans will needlessly develop cancers just so that the plastics insustry can maximize profits.
