Helicopter noise bothers resident

Published February 23. 2010 05:00PM

Helicopter traffic at the Carbon County Airport and the noise it makes late at night was a concern brought to Mahoning Township supervisors Monday evening by local resident Mary Lou Harvan. According to Harvan in the past week, there has been continuous noise late into the night and she wanted to know what could be done to prevent it as it is disturbing neighboring residents.

"My windows were vibrating from the noise," Harvan told supervisors during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Supervisor John Wieczorek said he has experienced in the past the constant traffic going to and from the airport and he was a half mile away from them. He told Harvan that when the problems occurred previously and it was brought to PennStar's attention, they rectified the problem. But he also said that another service is also using the airport so the township would need to find out exactly who was causing the disturbance and let them know it was bothering their neighbors.

Supervisors discussed how to best inform the airport of the problem and Wieczorek said his preference was to make a personal contact with the parties involved first before sending an official letter. He felt simply discussing the situation with them and explaining what was happening would be a better first step than to send a letter immediately.

He told Ms. Harvan and with the agreement of the board that he would approach the airport and the services and discuss the problems with the noise late at night with them and see if they could come to some kind of resolution.
