Tamaqua driver cited after crash

A Tamaqua driver was cited following a two-vehicle crash in Schuylkill County. State police at Schuylkill Haven reported on the accident along with two others investigated by troopers.

Troopers said Angela F. Cassel, 42, of Tamaqua, was stopped for a stop sign on Saint Clair Avenue, at the intersection with Mill Street in Norwegian Township, about 5:29 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, when she pulled into the intersection and into the path of a vehicle driven by Dawn D. Kentzel, 47, of Gilberton. Kentzel's 1989 Toyota Camry struck Cassel's 2001 Chrysler Town & Country.

Cassel and Kentzel received moderate injuries while a passenger with Kentzel, Kathleen M. Ammon, 45, of Port Carbon, sustained a major injury, troopers said. The injured were taken to the Schuylkill Medical centers, South and East, Pottsville.

Troopers cited Cassel for stop signs and yield signs.

Troopers probed another crash on Monday, about 7:01 a.m., along SR443 in West Brunswick Township. Troopers said Russell J. Gernert IV, 29, of New Ringgold, was driving a 2009 Ford Focus when he fell asleep. The vehicle crossed both east and westbound lanes and crashed into a utility pole with the front end. After impact the car flipped onto its roof and came to rest facing southeast along the berm.

Gernert sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene by New Ringgold ambulance personnel. Troopers cited Gernert for careless driving.

Troopers investigated a third crash on Monday which occurred about 11:39 p.m. along Schuylkill Mountain Road in Wayne Township. Troopers said Ronald R. McKay III, 20, of Schuylkill Haven, and his 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt were along the berm with the vehicle disabled due to an earlier crash into a snow bank. McKay was waiting for his friend to come and assist him. At this time Maurice D. Robinson, 65, of Schuylkill Haven, was eastbound in a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck and approaching and observed the Cobalt on the side of the road. He began to apply his brakes to slow down and his truck began to slide on the snow-covered road. The Ranger went onto the berm where the front end struck the left rear of the Cobalt. The impact forced the Cobalt into a tree which caused it to turn clockwise and come to rest against the tree. The Ranger continued a short distance, coming to rest in the eastbound lane.

No one was injured. Troopers said McKay was standing outside his vehicle at the time of the impact.
