Geography Bee winner at Weatherly Middle School
On Dec. 16, the Middle School LGI was tense with competitive spirit as 15 seventh graders and 20 eighth graders competed to be the first place winner of the Geography Bee at Weatherly Middle School.
The top 10 finalists were: Alex Hamm, Tea Heister, Shannon Kelly, Luke Reiner, Catherine Strizak, Michael Grega, Sean Barnesevitch, Tyler Miller, Caitlyn Priore and Tim Lash.
The competition narrowed down to three students: first place, Michael Grega; second place, Sean Barnesevitch; and third place, Shannon Kelly. Michael will advance to the next level of competition a written examination to determine the final state winners. State winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the national competition in Washington, D. C.
There are seven rounds in the preliminary competition and this year, Tim Lash, was able to answer all seven questions correctly. This has not been done in recent Bee history at Weatherly. Score keepers and time recorders for the event are members of the Weatherly High School Academic team: Shane Moran, Matthew Caccese (former Bee winner at Weatherly), John Geguzis and Joey Connors.
