Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 29 in the social hall of Zions Church, Lewistown Valley. A brief business session, conducted by President Kathy McGee, was held following a pot luck dinner. In lieu of a gift exchange, members donated to a local charity.

Perfect attendance awards were presented to June Leiby, Evelyn Adams, Mary Bridygham, Joan Fritz, Charlotte Lorah and Judy Kellner.

The meeting included installation of officers for 2010-2012. Judy Kellner served as installation officer. New officers are: June Leiby, president; Grace Ann Gerber, vice president; Louise Flexer, secretary; Evelyn Adams, treasurer; June Leiby, chaplain; Joan Fritz, sergeant at arms; and Mary Bridygham, historian.

Arrangement theme for the meeting was "vegetable garden," incorporating fruits, herbs and vegetables. First place was awarded to Evelyn Adams with Mary Bridygham earning second place.

A planning session for the new year will be held Jan. 12, at 6:30 p.m., at the home of June Leiby.

The next regular club meeting will be held in March.

Christmas trees

The Borough of Tamaqua's Street Department will be collecting discarded Christmas trees throughout January. Residents are to place their trees curbside on their regular trash collection days. Trees will be collected as time and weather permit.

Trees must be free of all tinsel and decorations. Residents are also asked to remove any plastic bags from the trees. Trees may also be dropped off behind the Tamaqua Borough Garage, at 421 rear E. Broad St.

No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is available. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:30 a.m. The service will be followed by a luncheon and the annual congregational meeting.

Also on Sunday, there will be a worship service held at the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week include: Tuesday, Prayer Time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry at 6:30 p.m., adult Bible study at 6:30 p.m.

St. Peter's

The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise Offering. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation Class will meet at 1 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, Food CoOp meets at 9 a.m., Search Committee meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Retirees meet at 10 a.m.; Thursday, Prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Worship and Music Committee meeting at 6 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursday. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m. and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.
