Kindergarten registration in the Lehighton Area School District will be held on March 2, 3, 4, and 5.
All Kindergarten registrations will take place at the dstrict administrative nuilding, 1000 Union St., near the high school. Before bringing a child to register, parents/guardians should contact Brenda Strausberger at (610) 377-7880 to schedule an appointment. Scheduling appointments avoid delays during the registration process. Appointment times will be scheduled from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:45 p.m.
In the event of inclement weather use the following procedure: two hour delay - appointments will start at 10 a.m. Appointments between 8 and 10 a.m. will be rescheduled. Snow day appointments will be rescheduled.
Children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2010 are eligible for kindergarten according to policy adopted by the school district. Children without kindergarten experience who will be 6 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2010, are eligible to register for first grade according to this same policy.
The intention to have a child enter first grade must be stated in writing at the time of registration. The youngster will be tested before the opening of school in August to determine readiness for first grade.
A state issued birth certificate or other acceptable proof of age and name is required for each child who is registered. Even if these papers are not available at the time of registration, the child should be registered. The document must be provided before the child will be admitted to school in August. Parent photo ID is requested at registration along with two proofs of residence.
State law requires that all children entering school for the first time must have written proof of the following immunizations: four doses of tetanus (one dose must have had to be administered on or after the fourth birthday), four doses of diphtheria (one dose must have had to be administered on or after the fourth birthday), three doses of poliomyelitis/infantile paralysis, two doses of measles, two doses of mumps, one dose of rubella (German measles), three doses of hepatitis B, two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or history of disease. Parents/guardians are advised to bring the necessary immunization records to the registration clinic along with your child. Proof of these immunizations must be provided before the child will be admitted to school.
Since all children are now required to have a Social Security number, it is optional to provide the school with this number.
Vision and hearing screening will be given to all youngsters during the registration time.
At registration, parents will sign for a date and time to have the kindergarten readiness assessment administered to each child. These assessments will take place May 4, 5, 6, and 7 at the administration building.
