PennDOT Engineering District 5 today announced the award of a contract to improve SR54 in Mahanoy City, Mahanoy and Ryan townships, Schuylkill County. The contract is financed with federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

PennDOT awarded Pennsy Supply, Inc. of Hummelstown, Dauphin County the $3.42 million contract to improve the road between Coles Street and Hillside Drive.

The project calls for milling and paving, new signs, curb ramp upgrades, guiderail upgrades and drainage inlet repairs.

This is a design-build project. Design-build is a project delivery system where the design and construction aspects are contracted with a single entity. Construction is expected to begin at some point this spring and finish in November.

Within the six-county District 5 region, PennDOT will invest $141 million of federal economic recovery funds on 23 transportation projects, which include road and bridge improvements and Intelligent Transportation System installations.
