Shawn McArdle, 18, of Nesquehoning, who is in his first year of college, was recently awarded the distinction of receiving his Eagle Scout Award.

The son of John and Delrey McArdle, his older brother is also an Eagle Scout.

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held on Jan. 9 in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Nesquehoning, and the Invocation and Benediction was performed by the Rev. Anthony Drouncheck.

Shawn's project consisted of repainting the entire interior of the Nesquehoning Recreation Center and the removal and reinstallation of a new flagpole.

He worked closely with the Nesquehoning Recreation Commission and borough council to gain approval for his project.

Scout leaders who took part in the program included Scoutmaster Joseph Trimmel and assistant Scout leaders Steve Homcha, Gerry Marouchoc and Matt Ockenhouse.

Troop 744 has the distinction of producing the following Eagle Scouts recently: Brenden J. McArdle, Ryan C. Applegate, Brent E. Homcha, Teo J. Heckman, Thomas Kuba, Shawn P. McArdle, and Joseph Trimmel, Jr.

The Eagle Scout Award is the highest rank a Boy Scout can receive. Each Boy Scout, by meeting specific requirements, advances though ranks called Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. After leading a project which will serve the community, Eagle palms are presented for merit badges earned.

A reception in the church hall followed the ceremony.

Shawn is a 2009 graduate of Marian Catholic High School.

He currently attends Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa., where he is studying for a degree in nursing.

He plans to become a flight nurse.
