Youngster goes for joy ride, puts grandmom's car in creek

A Schuylkill County youngster took his grandmother's car for a joy ride and crashed when he was trying to return it. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurerd on Tuesday, Jan. 26, about 6:10 p.m. along Market Street in the area of Renningers Market, in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said an eight-year-old boy from Schuylkill Haven took the keys of a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier from his grandmother's coat pocket and took the car for a ride. While attempting to return home he lost control of the vehicle while eastbound. The car went onto the berm and down an embankment and into a creek landing on the passenger side. The child was able to crawl out a window to safety. Damages were moderate to the car and the child was not injured.

The probe into the crash is continuing.
