Catholic schools

Our Lady of the Angels Academy, Lansford, which serves families in Coaldale, Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill, will celebrate Catholic Schools Week beginning Sunday, Jan. 31.

The theme of the week is "Dividends for Life."

The weeklong ceremonies will begin with an open house program from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, in St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford.

On Monday, Feb. 1, appreciation will be extended to the school's "Senior Angels" and community helpers during a program from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

The schedule for Tuesday, Feb. 2, includes a tribute to the students. They will be recognized during a science assembly at 1 p.m.

Dress Down Day will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, with everyone being asked to wear red, white and blue as a tribute to the nation. The event will benefit the American Red Cross. At 1 p.m. that day, a living rosary prayer service will be held in the church. A McDonald's luncheon will also be held for the children with a special person to be their guest (aunt, uncle, grandparents, etc.).

On Thursday, Feb. 4, students will participate in a "Dress to Express Day," in which they will be asked to dress up to the vocation they aspire to in the future.

The school's faculty and staff will be honored on Friday, Feb. 5. Catholic Schools Week will conclude with a 9 a.m. Mass in St. Katherine Church. Allentown. Diocese Bishop John Barres will be the celebrant. Following the Mass, a faculty and staff appreciation luncheon will be held in the church hall.

Nesquehoning

Lions meeting

There will be a meeting of the Nesquehoning Lions Club on Monday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. All members are urged to attend.

Council notes

Frank Jacobs was appointed to the borough planning commission at Wednesday night's borough council meeting, while David Rohlfing was reappointed to the zoning hearing board.

Coaldale

First Congregational Church

Services and activities scheduled at First Congregational Church, Coaldale, for the upcoming week are as follows:

Sunday, Jan. 31 9 a.m. Morning Worship; 10 a.m. Sunday School.

Tuesday, Feb. 2 7 p.m. Women's Class.

Wednesday, Feb. 3 11 a.m. Nursing home visits to St. Luke's-Miners Memorial, Coaldale, at 11 a.m. MapleShade, Nesquehoning, at 1:30 p.m.; 6:30 p.m. choir rehearsal.

Sunday, Feb. 7 9 a.m. Morning Worship; 10 a.m. Sunday School.

Monday, Feb. 8 7 p.m. Church board meeting.

Summit Hill

Recreation commission

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the borough. Anyone interested in helping to plan and promote recreational activities for the youth of the community is invited to attend.

There are current vacancies on the commission. Persons interested in serving on the board can contact any borough council member.

Historical society

The Summit Hill Historical Society Museum has an extensive collection of photographs and memorabilia, a model of the Switchback Railroad and many other artifacts that depict typical mining life in Summit Hill over the past 200 years. The museum is open on Friday evenings or can be visited by appointment by calling Maxine Vermillion, (570) 645-9772.
