Sherkness to attend Penn State Hazleton
Drew Sherkness has decided to further his academic, baseball and basketball careers at Penn State Hazleton.
Sherkness, a Marian High School graduate, was a three year starter for the baseball team where he played first base and pitched. He had 25 hits, 28 runs scored, 36 RBIs, a slugging percentage of .875 and an on-base percentage of 481. With eight home runs on the season, Sherkness tied a Marian record and led the Schuylkill League this year. Sherkness was also selected as the first baseman for the Anthracite Baseball Coaches Assocation Division II 2010 All Star Team.
In addition to baseball, Sherkness was also a standout basketball player for the Colts where he averaged 9.2 pts per game and 10.2 rebounds a game. He was a second-team selection to the TIMES NEWS All-Star team.
He will be pursuing a degree in Engineering.
"Drew's ability to hit the long ball at any given moment made him a force to be reckoned with," said Colt baseball coach Jeff Nietz. "During the past two years, Drew's power as well as his pitching ability and physical size at first base made him the ultimate baseball player in our program. His work ethic is unmatched by few players I have ever coached; long after the team had quit for the day, Drew would stay behind and hit bucket after bucket of baseballs in order to improve.
"He will make an immediate impact at Hazleton Penn State and be a major contributor to their program."
