DUI arrests reported by PSP
State police at Lehighton reported on four driving under the influence (DUI) arrests made by troopers in recent days, including two stemming from accidents.
Troopers said about 12:36 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, Robert P. Smith, 19, of Kunkletown, was driving a 1989 Dodge Ram truck northbound on Kunkletown Road, in the area of Fiddletown Road, in Eldred Township, Monroe County, and attempting to negotiate a curve. The truck left the road and struck a parked 1988 Ford Ranger pickup truck.
After impact the Ram struck a boulder and rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest. Smith was found to be under the influence and was taken to the Palmerton hospital for a blood test. The DUI charge is pending the test results, troopers said.
On Wednesday, July 28, about 8:38 p.m. troopers responded to a crash along SR209, a quarter-mile north of the barracks in Towamensing Township. Troopers said Kevin Elmer Mackes, 57, of Lehighton, was driving a Jeep Wrangler when he attempted to make a left turn into his driveway area and struck a utility pole. Troopers said he is facing a DUI charge.
On Monday, July 26, about 7:38 p.m. troopers stopped a car along Evergreen Road at Flora Road, Towamensing Township, Carbon County. The driver was identified as Fernando Sanchez, 20, of Hazleton. He was found to be under the influence and taken to the Palmerton hospital for a blood test. The DUI charge is pending the test results.
Also at the scene a passenger with Sanchez, Kevin Hernandez, 18, of Hazleton, fled from the scene but was later found. He was taken to the barracks and issued a citation for disorderly conduct and then released.
On Wednesday about 10:15 pm. troopers stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of Delaware Avenue in Palmerton for traffic violations. The driver was identified as William Kenneth Schlicher, 20, of Whitehall. He was found to be under the influence and taken to the Palmerton hospital for a blood test. The DUI charge is pending test results.
